It’s Shabbat. Today we

Today we continued to have armed security at our two Hillel centers. We worked with local law enforcement. We consulted with national security. We planned and ensured our students’ safety.

Today we held students who were having emotional breakdowns. We wiped their tears.

Today we provided meals and snacks.

Today we provided a community for Jewish students who never felt connected to their Jewishness but at this moment just wanted to be around other Jews.

Today we worked with the Counseling and Psychological Services to ensure Jewish students were receiving accommodations in their classes.

Today we paused our regularly scheduled programming and pivoted to support the current needs of our students.

Today we provided therapy dogs, and support groups, and listening circles, and wellness activities.

Today we met with university administrators to stress the need for safety and support for Jewish students.

Today we woke up early and will be going to bed very late.

Today we prepared for Shabbat– anticipating larger crowds with staff who are all working overtime to ensure everyone gets cared for.

Today we empowered student leaders to raise their voices.

Today we educated students on what was happening in Israel and what it all means.

Today we worked with our community partners to support the greater San Diego Jewish community.

Today we prayed.
Today we cried.
Today we saw hope in the eyes of the next generation.

And next week, we will do it all again.

This crisis is far from over but Hillel of San Diego is here and will continue to be here for the next generation. We will get through this b’yachad (together).

May this Shabbat bring us all peace.
