Let’s Talk About Some Wins

unnamed-4

Let’s talk about some wins.

It can sometimes feel like we’re getting beaten down left and right so it is important to also see some light during this time of darkness.

On Tuesday, our students marched with 290,000 Jews and allies in Washington D.C. It was so moving to see the next generation of leadership. Special thanks to the Jewish Federation, Hillel International, and Maccabee Task Force for helping make that possible.

Proud is an understatement. Our students showed their Jewish pride, their Jewish leadership, and hope for our Jewish future.

On Wednesday, Rich Leib, Chair of the UC Regents, and Dr. Michael Drake, President of the University of California, spoke against hate and intolerance. We are hopeful that their words will be used to spur action on campus.

On Thursday, students at both USD and SDSU educated their peers in a way that celebrated civil discourse and reflected their compassionate leadership.

And today, Friday, we will once again celebrate Shabbat together as a community.

It can feel like there is a lot of darkness right now, but I also want to remind you that there is a lot of light. Our young people are showing up to be Jewish. Our young people are showing up to be leaders. Our young people are showing up because they care.

As a community, we should all be so proud of them.

Shabbat Shalom,
Karen

P.S.
If you’d like to learn more about what’s happening on campus, please join us for our next Zoom update on Tuesday, November 21st at 7 pm. You can register here. We will be joined by two amazing student leaders, Jason Bercovitch, Rabbi Scott Meltzer, and Michael Rabkin, who will be speaking about governmental strategies, issues within academia, and what is happening nationally.

Heart of Hillel: Meet Kira

November 21, 2025

Kira’s Hillel story began as an undergraduate at USD, where she was one of only four Jewish students on campus. For Kira, there were no Shabbat dinners. No immersive Jewish learning. No visible Jewish community.

Heart of Hillel: Meet Sonia

November 14, 2025

Sonia is a retired UCSD faculty member and a proud parent of Triton and Torero alumni. She didn’t have Hillel when she was in college, but she made sure her children did. And once she saw the impact Hillel had on them, she jumped in with both feet, eventually joining the Hillel of San Diego Board of Directors.
