Statement on UCSD Viral Social Media Post

We believe it is important to clarify misinformation that is circulating online regarding a video from an anti-Israel protest that occurred on Nov. 1 at UCSD. Here are a few of the essential facts:

  1. The video being circulated is an unaltered video from a protest that occurred while Jewish students at UCSD spoke about rising antisemitism on campus during an Associated Students meeting on November 1.
  1. Outside that meeting, some of the protestors were carrying Al Qaeda flags, which felt threatening to a number of students, who reported it to school administrators. Students were informed that the Al Qaeda flags were allowed to be carried, citing freedom of speech.

3. Due to the hostile environment, some Jewish students who spoke about rising antisemitism at the Associated Students meeting received a police escort from the meeting back to Hillel.

We hope this clarifies the timing and nature of the video, as well as any misinformation circulating about the veracity of the video itself.

The video is not doctored, and is not a hoax. This protest did happen while Jewish students were appealing to their student government to take seriously the threat of antisemitism on campus. Some Jewish students did have a police escort from the meeting on November 1.

While antisemitism is rising on our campus and in society, Hillel of San Diego will always remain a safe and welcoming space for Jewish students. There is no place for antisemitism or hate on our campus.
