Hillel’s Legacy Society

Your Legacy

Generations of Jewish college students will experience flourishing Jewish life on campus.

You support Hillel of San Diego year after year, because you care about equipping today’s Jewish college students to be the leaders of tomorrow’s Jewish community. You want to ensure that Hillel will always be there to help shape their lives at this formative time through meaningful engagement.

Through a planned gift to Hillel you can make a lasting impact for generations to come.

There are multiple estate planning vehicles you can use for a legacy gift, such as a bequest in your will or trust or simply designating Hillel as a beneficiary in your IRA. No matter which plan you make, the most important thing is not to wait. Today is the best time to start making these plans.

The best place to start is by asking yourself the question, “what do I want my legacy to be?”

To inspire you, some of Hillel of San Diego’s Legacy Society members have shared their answers to this question on this page.

Hillel of San Diego’s professional and volunteer team is available at any time to have a heartfelt conversation with you and your family about the legacy you wish to leave and the role that Hillel of San Diego can play in fulfilling your vision. Please contact Lisa Kalal, Senior Advancement Officer, at lkalal@hillelsd.org to learn more.

When I was approached a few years ago about committing Hillel into a legacy plan - my initial reaction was, wow a legacy plan.... being in my mid-20's at the time, I had never given anything of the sort any meaningful thought. But, it was explained to me the impact it would have on Hillel not only today but also in the future - and immediately my answer was an enthusiastic YES. The reason I am passionate about the concept of a legacy plan, is because aside from hard dollars going to Hillel, it reinforces in each person's mind the idea that Hillel is here today and will be here for each generation to follow in the future. I highly encourage anyone, no matter their age, or distance between them and the later decades of their life, to make the commitment today to help Hillel and those it serves for generations to come.

Youth are the future of Judaism and of a strong U.S.-Israel relationship. An investment in Hillel of San Diego promotes that and fosters Jewish continuity.

We both grew Jewishly through Hillel while at college. We want to fulfill our obligation and ensure the next generation of college students has the opportunity to explore their Judaism, connect to Israel, and make lifelong friends.

Through its presence and engagement on college campuses in San Diego, Hillel of San Diego is the place where Jewish college students of all backgrounds come together and meet, thrive, and learn to become our next generation of Jewish leaders. Our legacy gift will ensure that future generations of Jewish college students will have the same opportunity as those who came before them.

What are my options for creating my legacy commitment?

There are many estate planning vehicles available, but the two easiest and most common are the bequest and retirement plan beneficiary designation. Both are options available to anyone at any age.

Charitable Bequest

A gift from your will or trust

A bequest is among the most common ways to make a legacy gift. In your will or trust, include the following information:

“My executor/trustee shall distribute X
to Hillel of San Diego (EIN 33-0519225).”

The X can be:

  • a percentage of your estate/trust;

  • a specific dollar amount;

  • specific assets; or

  • a combination of the above.

Retirement Assets

Name a beneficiary to your investments

Donating part or all of your unused retirement assets, such as your IRA, 401(k), 403(b), pension, or other tax-deferred plan, is an excellent way to help Hillel of San Diego.

To leave your retirement assets to Hillel of San Diego, you will need to complete a beneficiary designation form provided by your retirement plan custodian. You can list Hillel of San Diego (EIN 33-0519225) as a beneficiary.

If you designate Hillel as beneficiary, we will benefit from the full value of your gift because your IRA assets will not be taxed at your death. Talk to your financial advisor about how your estate may benefit from an estate tax charitable deduction for the gift.

For information about other estate planning vehicles, please contact your financial advisor or schedule an appointment with our partners at the San Diego Jewish Community Foundation.
